Timanfaya National Park
The Timanfaya National Park was created in 1974 and can be found on the west side of Lanzarote. It is an exemplary geological park that covers an area, roughly, of 50km sq. The park is a reserve of the area of the main volcanic eruptions that took place in the 18th Century.
The Timanfaya National Park is a must for any visitor to Lanzarote. The landscape of craters, volcanos and volcanic fields really is a sight to be seen. The main tourist attraction within the park is a man made route that stretches 14km, up to its highest point of 370m. During this guided journey you can witness the amazing shapes and colours that the park has to offer, along with countless craters and crevices. It's a fascinating journey that is almost out of this world.
Within the Park holiday makers that visit the park will take the windy road up to the El Diablo restaurant that offers a panoramic view over the Timanfaya National Park.
The El Diablo restaurant provides breathtaking views over the park and serves a Canarian menu which is prepared on a natural grill using geothermal heat, although the kitchen closes at 3pm so if you want to sample the food then be sure to get their at a reasonable time. Just outside El Diablo you can also see regular guiser demonstrations that demonstrate just how hot the ground is just meters under the surface you are standing on!
Fire Mountains, known as 'The MontaƱas del Fuego' were created between 1730 and 1736 when it is thought that more than 100 volcanoes rose up and devastated the west of the island. The last eruptions noted were in 1824, however due to the climate of the island the National Park appears much the same as it did just after the eruptions.
To visit Fire Mountain and the Timanfaya National Park you will need to hire a car or book on an organised coach trip. The park is located on the LZ-67 between Tinajo and Yaiza.
If you haven't already done so then add the Timanfaya National Park onto your list of places to visit on your next trip to Lanzarote.
