Dating back to the end of the 15th Century wine making in the Canaries began following the conquest of the Islands of Gran Canaria, Tenerife and La Palma. Today, La Geria, with its peculair agricultural landscape, is the wine producing region on the Island.
Literally, thousands of semi-circular walls are built around hollows scraped from the thick layer of lapilli. Each hollow contains just a single single vine.
At first thought Lanzarote doesn't seem like the ideal place for growing grapes, due to the climate. However, the genious, unique method of cultivation in La Geria allows for moisture to be trapped from the trade winds.
Lanzarote is an "Appellation d'Origine" ( a french term for a denominated, governed wine region) wine producing area, which includes a dozen vintners.
Lanzarote produces excellent wines, however oddly not many of them are exported.
