The Timanfaya National Park is 'the' most popular tourist attraction in Lanzarote. Spanning over the south west the Fire mountain nearly caused complete devistation to Lanzarote by killing off everything on the Island during a 5 year erruption.
The National Park is a must for any visitor to Lanzarote.
Fire Mountains, known as 'The Montañas del Fuego' were created between 1730 and 1736 when it is thought that more than 100 volcanoes rose up and devastated the west of the island. The last eruptions noted were in 1824, however due to the climate of the island the National Park appears much the same as it did just after the eruptions. The area was declared a national park in 1968.
Holiday makers that visit the park will take the windy road up to the El Diablo restaurant that gives a panoramic view over the national park. It is here that you can also witness the heat that lies underground as food is cooked on the man-made grill (basically a hole in the ground!)
Just outside the 'El Diablo' is where you can also witness the demonstration of the man made guisers that show just how hot the ground under the earth is.
To visit Fire Mountain and the Timanfaya National Park you will need to hire a car or book on an organised coach trip.
The Timanfaya National Park is a must visit on your next holiday in Lanzarote.
