Lanzarote Essentials

Off to Lanzarote? Lucky you! Here are a few things that might be of interest to you whilst you are there...

General Information:

  • Lanzarote is the fourth largest of the Spanish Canary Islands.
  • Their currency is the Euro.
  • They speak Spanish - because it is governed by Spain!
  • Arrecife is the capital of Lanzarote.
  • Time Zone is GMT. Daylight Saving Time begins on Sunday, March 28 and ends on Sunday, October 31.
  • Lanzarote is located in Western Europe Time zone.
  • The main religion is Roman Catholic.
  • VAT is currently 5% - it makes things look nice and cheap compared to what you might be used to in the UK!
  • Latitude is 28° 57’ N and Longitude is 13° 32’ W.

Useful Telephone Numbers whilst you are there:

  • Emergency Services: 112
  • Arrecife Hospital: 928 595 000
  • UK Consolate: 928 267 774
  • Lanzarote Airport: 928 846 000
  • Stolen Credit Card Phone: 915 192 100

Duty Free:

The Canary Islands enjoy a special Duty Free status. This makes items such as Alcohol, Tobacco, and Perfumes much cheaper than elsewhere in the EU.

Prices are often much better in the resorts than in the Airport or on the Aircraft itself. On our last visit for example perfume in Playa Blanca was €29 and in the airport the same product was €37!

Visa Details

A Visa is not required for EU passport holders.
US, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand and Israeli citizens may enter Spain as tourists. No Visa is required for a vist that lasts no longer than 90 days.

Driving in Lanzarote?

Remember to carry your car hire papers with you at all times, along with some form of ID.
You may be subject to a random check and drink / drugs test. As in the UK, driving under the influence is illegal.
We've heard that the local police may also fine or charge you if you are not wearing appropriate footwear whilst driving. Inappropriate footwear is shoes without a back, for example Flip Flops or Crocs - or bare foot!

Innoculations

No vaccinations are required to visit Lanzarote, although if in doubt we recommend you consult your GP before you visit.

Techy stuff:

  • They use RJ11 telephone plugs
  • Electrical plugs are 220 Volts AC, 50hz two-pin so if you plan on taking a laptop or phone charger then take a European adapter.
