Famara

At the foot of the large cliffs in the north of Lanzarote sits Famara, a small fishing village that has become a bit of a surfers paradise.

La Caleta de FamaraAlthough often referred to as just Famara, it is actually split into two areas. As you drive down the road to Famara, you will see two built up areas. To the left is the fishing village known as La Caleta. On the right is a more modern development of bungalows which is a combined holiday and residential complex that sits in the shadow of the cliffs.

La Caleta itself is a small fishing village that, despite its popularity, has managed to maintain its laid back way of live and hasn't bowed down to the pressures of tourism. Along the sandy main street you will find a couple of surf shops with equipment available for sale or rental. A sparse selection of seafood restaurants, a tapas bar and a 'supermarket', amongst the residential buildings, essentially are the make up of the village.

So what is the attraction with Famara?

Thanks to its location, strong Atlantic currents, high winds and expansive beach Famara is popular with water sports enthusiasts who are seeking their next adrenaline rush. The strong winds and currents mean that it isn't ideal for swimming or bathing, but its a great haven for those keen on extreme sports such as windsurfing or kite bugging.

Famara is often host to international windsurfing and kitesurfing competitions where athletes travel from around the world to take part.
