Teguise

Once the proud capital of Lanzarote, Teguise (not to be confused with Costa Teguise) offers its visitors great opportunities for shopping. Not to be missed is the famous outdoor market held every Sunday morning when the village turns itself into a grand bazaar! It's a great mix of the traditional and modern.

In 1418, Maciot de Bethencourt first pronounced the town's boundaries making Teguise the first urban centre in the Canary Islands. Even today, it's domestic architecture can be seen in the beautifully restored palaces and stately homes.

On a Monday to Saturday Teguise sits a silent, but comes to life on a Sunday when the market comes to town.

The market runs from 9am to 2pm every Sunday and is not to be missed. Especially if you are visiting Lanzarote for one week.

On our visits to the Teguise market we have often found some beautifully hand crafted works of art, from leather stools to sand sculptured lizards. There is also a manner of food and drink on sale around the town ranging from English Breakfast to Tapas! The cobbled streets of Teguise also play host to many traditional bars. Ideal for the gents who have had enough of shopping and fancy a pint whilst watching the world go by!

These days, apart from the Sunday Market the town of Teguise is a shadow of its former self, although we would recommend a visit even to see the wonderful architecture (especially if you want to beat the crowds on a Sunday!)
