Starting out as a small fishing harbour in the 15th Century, Arrecife has since grown into the capital of modern day Lanzarote. Arrecife is now a popular tourist destination with a number of apartments, shops and bars. As the capital, Arrecife is commonly known for having the only airport in Lanzarote.
Arrecife has the only high rise building on the island, which has sadly been destroyed by fire. The reason for this is that no building on the island should be taller than the largest palm tree!
Arrecife is where you will find most of the locals and ex-pats. As the capital it hosts the best shopping on the island, with a pedestrianised street with back to back shops. Wednesdays are market day on the sea front, where you can find some local craft and great deals on clothing and home accessory products.
The capital has a large beach front that is pretty much unused.
Lanzarote airport is 5km away from Arrecife. The airport is located between Arrecife and Puerto Del Carmen on the East of Lanzarote. Due to the boom in tourism over the last 10 years or so, the Airport is now very busy. It has recently undergone a refurbishment and now has a second terminal. Although a small airport the facilities are very good. You will find a high standard of shops within the departure lounge and with any development they are always improving the services.
Arrecive is the gateway for Lanzarote Holiday makers.
